Countless Ukrainian cities and towns have been bombarded. An important fact to note, however, is that most of its infrastructure was developed during the Soviet era, be it the steel plants, chemical facilities, or its weapons factories. Time has taken its toll on these factories, and most of them have fallen into disrepair. Although they are well-maintained, warfare can result in the damage and destruction of these facilities, leading to the deaths of thousands.

Hydropower dams could fail, for instance, and flood entire towns and villages. One of the most dangerous threats is the possibility of a toxic waste spill from one of Ukraine’s chemical facilities, such as the plant near Toresk.

The Toresk facility has two huge man-made toxic waste ponds, each emitting sickly-sweet phenol fumes, along with gaseous naphthalene and formaldehyde, capable of causing severe nausea and dizziness.

The odd shell from the bombing of the Russian troops could breach the storage ponds and send thousands of tons of waste racing downhill, flooding an even larger 8 million ton, man-made lake filled with chemical byproducts below. Within 10 minutes, such a surge could breach levees around that site and send millions of tons of toxic sludge pouring into the Zalizna river, with a tidal wave of chemical ooze knocking out bridges and electrical equipment downstream, and contaminating drinking water for the entire region.

Just like how so many of the 9/11 attack’s first responders suffered from cancers several years after the incident, the same could happen to the population of Ukraine. Heavy exposure to carcinogenic dust and debris could result in years of pain and suffering, long after the war ends. Furthermore, containment efforts and treatment will be halted as long as the war goes on, leading to a fall in preventive measures early on.

“We don’t even know what number of square kilometers of land have been destroyed,” says Tetiana Omelianenko, a waste management consultant based in Kyiv. Ukrainian environmental experts have created online pages where local residents and companies can report environmental incidents during the conflict that might later require remediation, like spilled gasoline from destroyed fuel storage facilities, or the destruction of an industrial plant. “After the end of the war, it will be evaluated and published,” Omelianenko says. “Only after that can we do some estimations of environmental damage.” NGOs like the previously mentioned Ecoaction have been key in recording such information.

The information on the long lasting effects of the war will eventually be compiled and recorded, and action will be taken to rectify it. However, the heinous acts of the Russian forces will leave a lasting effect on the citizens of Ukraine. Not only have their lives been turned upside down, but the very earth they stand upon has been contaminated to a degree that is still not even known. If the nations of the world tread upon the path of war-mongers, the efforts of activists and environmentalists may just amount to naught.

[61,63,68,78
56,55,97,94,98,99
0":"post-5310","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-climate-crisis","8":"category-conflict","9":"category-environment","10":"category-society","11":"tag-changemaking","12":"tag-climate-change","13":"tag-conflict","14":"tag-environmental-justice","15":"tag-global-crisis","16":"tag-russia-ukraine-war","17":"cs-entry","18":"cs-video-wrap
["GET
